Herbs contain a complex array of phytochemicals that contribute to their characteristic activities and 'personalities.' This class will help herbalists, holistic health care practitioners, pharmacists, students, and anyone interested in the science of plant medicine to better understand how the constituents of commonly used botanical medicines influence human health and physiology. Lisa Ganora, who teaches phytochemistry at the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine, uses her twenty-five years of experience in traditional herbalism as the matrix for this uniquely holistic approach. With emphasis on direct experience of the plants through sensory evaluation ('organoleptics'), we will cover the most important constituents found in healing foods and well-researched Western herbs including St. John's Wort, Nettles, Yellow Dock, Hawthorn, Dandelion, Ginseng, Black Cohosh, etc. We'll also cover synergy (how phytochemicals work together), variability, solubility and extraction, toxicology, and herb / drug interactions. You don't need an extensive background in chemistry to benefit from this material - anyone with an interest in learning more about the inner mysteries of botanicals is welcome to attend! Class will be held from 6:00 to 9:00 pm each night. Registration fee ($50) includes class and book Herbal Constituents: A Holistic Approach for Students and Practitioners of Botanical Medicine. This 16-hour course is scheduled over four days: Tuesday, June 7 - Friday, June 10; 6:00 - 9:00 pm.
