First Class: Hands-on Introduction to Home Herbal Pharmacy
- Making your own herbal medicines at home is empowering, economical, and fun! Learn time-tested traditional recipes for creating good-tasting herbal teas, potent infusions, decoctions, syrups, vinegars, tinctures and extracts, oils and salves from different kinds of herbal materials. Understand why some herbs work better in the form of water extractions while others are best used as tinctures (alcohol-based extracts) or salves (oil-based extracts). We'll go over extraction methods, preservation and safety, stability & shelf-life, etc. This class will provide students with hands-on experience in traditional home herbal pharmacy. A list of supplies to bring will be sent to you when you register; herbal material will be provided.
Second Class: Healing Tonics - Nourishing Herbs and Foods for Daily Health
- What is a tonic and how does it work to support health? Nourishing tonic herbs are the foundation of Wise Woman Tradition healing. By providing the body with a rich source of vitamins, minerals, and important phytochemicals, these traditional tonic herbs support our endogenous healing wisdom and provide the body's metabolism with the materials it needs for optimal function. We'll make infusions of herbs such as Dandelion, Burdock, Nettles, Red Clover, Oatstraw, etc. and prepare a mineral tonic vinegar. We'll also discuss the ancient tonic mushrooms (e.g., Reishi, Maitake) and medicinal foods (e.g., Blueberries, Garlic, spaghetti sauce) to support health and vitality.
Third Class: Natural Remedies for Common Ailments and Herbal First Aid
- Many common ailments (e.g., colds and flu, digestive system disturbances, cuts and scrapes, sunburn, poison ivy) respond well to simple herbal and nutritional support. We'll go over the most commonly-used herbs for safe self-treatment of minor ailments and accidents, winter woes, and digestive discomforts that can be taken care of at home. Learn how to build your own natural first-aid kit with herbs and essential oils. We'll also discuss the limitations of herbal treatments, when to go to the doctor, and how to integrate herbs with antibiotics and other conventional medicines.
Fourth Class: Boosting the Immune System
- Germs are real, but the immune system has a major influence on whether or not they can make us sick. The immune system is also responsible for helping to prevent degenerative diseases such as cancer and arthritis. Learn which foods, tonic mushrooms, and nourishing herbs act to help build and strengthen immunity. Specific herbs for stimulating the immune system, such as Echinacea, will also be discussed. In addition, we'll take a look at the influence of herbs and foods on allergies and auto-immune disorders.
Fifth Class: Herbs and Foods for Vitality and Energy
- Learn how to support the adrenal glands and other systems which regulate the body's energy and vitality. Which foods and eating patterns can promote sustained energy? Which substances stimulate, yet ultimately sap our vitality? Which tonic herbs and adaptogens can help promote stamina without over-stimulation? We'll look at energy-building foods and herbs suitable for different genders, lifestyles, and constitutions. We'll also talk about the influence of food, sleep, and exercise on the body's energy-related hormonal systems.
